Ideally, during initial script development or early pre-production. Involving SFX artists early allows time for custom sculpting, molding, patch testing, and camera tests under lighting, preventing costly delays during production.
We use high-performance materials depending on the project's visual and practical needs, including platinum-cure silicone, foam latex, gelatin, and liquid latex. Silicone is preferred for skin-like realism and translucency, while foam latex is ideal for lightweight, flexible creature applications.
We use medical-grade, sweat-resistant adhesives (like Pros-Aide or Telesis) combined with skin barrier sprays. An on-set FX artist continually monitors continuity, manages touch-ups, and handles safe removal at the end of the day.
High-definition cameras reveal subtle edges and artificial skin tones. We pre-test colors under the project's exact lighting setups (cool, warm, or natural) and blend edges using specialized solvents so the prosthetics appear seamless on screen.
Most soft appliances (like silicone or foam latex) are single-use per application because blending edges melt or tear during removal. For multi-day shoots, we create custom molds to cast identical fresh pieces for every filming day.
